Dragged out the ice with the tongs, set up the pop-up darkhouse and put one of Frank Mizera's old Decoys down the hole along with one of my early decoys, an obvio...us take off on his. Lucy jigged mine, I jigged Franks. 9:15 the biggest Northern Pike I've ever seen came in under Lucy's corner, and looked like he would take up the whole hole. His back looked to be about 7 inches across down in the water. He was already turning away from the black and white decoy under Lu when I saw him and I lifted my spear to try for a shot he saw my shadow. It looked to me like he looked up at me through the water and with one flick of his powerful tail he shot off towards shore. The one that got away... Lucy didn't even get to see him. He was easily bigger than 36 inches.

Spearing my first Northern Pike December 9, 2011

I went spearing this afternoon. Didn't think I would make it in time. Six inches of ice here in Ely on most lakes. Arrived at 3:00, cut my hole and had the portable up in strong wind by 3:30. Sat down inside and put on one of my decoys, then one of my friend's Jay McEvers, then Harley Ragan's, then mine and back to McEvers (it has a "flasher" spinning blade attached. Let it sit in the hole. 4:05 a little one came in. I was so excited after not seeing anything but a sucker for 3 years that I threw at him. He got stuck between my tines, but not hurt, so I released him. He swam away fast. Put the decoy back in the hole, another one came in and nosed it and shot off like a rocket. Then a bigger one came in slowly. Sitting for a long time and making me nervous. Inching in... Inching in. I threw and pinned him to the bottom. I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest. Blue is a good color.

26" pike. He was handpainted with base coats of white, yellow and orange, accented with a gold and blue rub. I used green, red, gold and blue to give it an older finish, not really distressed, but aged. Your eyes are drawn to the eyes of the frog because of their big blue size. These are antique german teddy bear eyes that I acquired in mass quantities several years ago. They are becoming somewhat of a trademark on some of my large decoys. They really add personality and make the decoy unique, that is for sure.

PRICE ON THIS FISH DECOY IS $125.00 PLUS $5 FOR SHIPPING. Contact me through the link to my website in the right column. Posting email addresses and links on blogs don't play well with the robot spam thingy hack jobs that search the web trying to make life interesting for all of us. I will accept paypal, just let me know and I'll send you an invoice. Otherwise money order, personal check are fine.

This is a one of a kind creation. Handcarved with a knife. Handpainted with care.

Thanks for lOOking! Tim

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Well, these legs don't stay level as he swims, the kick up and down and actually give him some pretty darn close to real frog kickin action in the water. I had fun taking these pictures and even put some blue food coloring in the ole bathtub water.

Frank Mizera's lures each have a unique shape, although similar through style and muscle memory, they were each hand carved and hand painted. I hope the pictures below help. While I may be sketchy on some of the commercial fishing lure company's details, I'm 100% positive that these lures were not made by Ely's Frank Mizera. I've handled and own enough of the real thing to know the difference. Mizera did not stamp or sign his decoys or lures. His style was his signature as with most old timers.

Why so similar? Well, as with any good, successful design, these are lures that worked when fishing for lake trout, their are 100s of similar "airplane" jigs or airplane lures that I've seen and found in tackle boxes all over Northern Minnesota. I've got an extensive collection of unknowns that have similar qualities to each of these lures.

If you run across any, I'm interested in buying, especially several pieces by the same maker and pieces from Frank Mizera and Johnny Novak of Ely. I'll showcase some of my Novak airplane jigs at another time. Each of these guys made metal jigs as well. That's a story for another time.

Tim

The Fish Decoy Carvers of the Past Issue One: Frank Mizera of Ely, Minnesota

FIRST CLASS FOLK ART
The picture on my header showcases the folk art fishing decoys of Frank Mizera from my home town, Ely, Minnesota. Frank was a guide and sold his decoys and trout jigs to his friends, commonly for $1.50 each. Barbershops, hardware stores and friends carried them. The tails were delicate and he used cedar. This photo includes a rare original metal tail decoy that was very far from the norm. There are also a couple of metal trout jigs and a wooden trout jig (cheater decoy) with a dressed hair. Present as well are many cheater decoys, used here predominantly to fish for lake trout. They are range from early, to barber pole striped, to orange and finally unfinished wooden blanks. A rough very small and very early decoy is missing much of its paint. I like red and white the best even though his fish of other colors seem to be much more valuable to collectors. The old bobbers keep the theme going. The spear is a Pimple. If anyone knows anything about the minnow bucket/box with the twin triangular metal floats, I'd love to know. Found it in Ely. Frank Mizera died in 1969. He continues to be an inspiration to the carvers and collectors that love darkhouse spearing decoys.

Fish Decoys I'm Currently Working On.

Here's a couple of decoys I'm working on now. These are from locally harvested white cedar that has been drying in my garage for 5 years. Nearly all of my work is hand-painted, though I've been experimenting with an airbrush a little of late.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
